Pneumatic Multiuse

They tend to be a source of contamination and a type of ‘necessary evil’, but it is certain that the pneumatics that don’t work anymore have found good use in the hands of two radical artists in Puerto Viejo of Limon.

Sam an English girl and Ana a Spanish girl both learned at the gallery ‘Luluberlu’ in this port city to make amongst other crafts, beautiful bags and other accessories with the pneumatics.

The first girl learned to design clothes and the second studied contemporary jewellery, and so this propensity for design led them to experiment with this material.

Each has her own style, but the basics for treating the material are the same. First they reclaim the old materials, wash them well, study the form of the rubber and it’s lines and shapes. They treat it and when clean and shiny they let their imaginations fly with scissors and other tools.

Sam prefers to transform them by using adornments of shells, metal studs, seeds and other materials found in the South Caribbean. She designs evening bags and those for everyday use that no one would guess are disused inner tubes. The English girl is registering her brand ‘PNEU’ to identify her creations.

Ana for her part cuts and sews bags of diverse form and mini bags that she compliments with metal. As jewellery designer she is undertaking a brand names ‘Sopa Negra’ (black soup). Her pieces are made from silver in the shape of beans and she uses them in elaborate rosaries and broaches. However for the moment she is concentrating her attention on the bags.
